Accessibility

Everyone in Fresno and Clovis should be able to use this website, including people who use a screen reader, a keyboard, magnification or voice control. This page sets out what we have done, what we know is still imperfect, and how to tell us when something gets in your way.

What we aim at

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, version 2.1, at level AA. That is the standard the Americans with Disabilities Act and California's Unruh Civil Rights Act are read against.

Aiming is not the same as certifying. Nobody has audited this site formally, and the limitations listed below say so plainly rather than leaving you to discover them. We would rather list the gaps than overstate the work.

Every page is served as complete HTML, so the content is readable and the message form still submits if scripts are blocked or switched off. The scripts the site carries are small and none of them carries content: one decides whether to fetch the background video, one closes the mobile menu after an in-page jump, one checks the form before it posts, and one is the visit measurement tag named in the privacy policy.

What we have done

Each of these was measured on the site as it is built, not taken from a design file:

  • One main heading per page, with the others following in order, so a screen reader can build a clean outline of the page. Checked on all five pages.
  • Every link, button and image has a name for assistive technology. On the home page that is 43 links, 1 button and 10 images, with none left unnamed when read through the browser's accessibility tree; a service page and the confirmation page came back the same.
  • Page regions are marked as banner, navigation, main content and footer content, so assistive technology can jump between them instead of reading a page from the top every time.
  • The first thing the Tab key reaches is a Skip to content link, so a keyboard user does not have to walk the whole menu on every page.
  • Every control can be reached and used from the keyboard, in an order that follows the page, and the focused control is shown with a visible outline rather than having that outline removed.
  • Contrast: every text and background pair the site ships measures at or above the AA threshold of 4.5 to 1. The lowest is 4.59 to 1, on the small uppercase labels; body copy measures 8.3 to 1, the hero heading 17.3 to 1, and the primary button 9.7 to 1.
  • Nothing scrolls sideways at 320 pixels of width, which is roughly what a desktop browser at 400 percent zoom looks like.
  • The message form labels each field above the field itself, marks the four required fields, and can be completed without a mouse.
  • The background clip on the home page is silent, has no controls and plays no audio. It is not loaded at all when the device asks for reduced motion, and the photograph underneath stays in place, so nothing is lost either way.
  • The phone number is a link you can tap rather than a picture of a number.
  • There is no visual puzzle to solve before sending a message. The spam filtering is a hidden field that a person never sees.

Known limitations

These are the gaps we know about. They are here because a statement that lists only successes is not much of a statement:

  • No formal audit. We have measured the site, and tested it with a keyboard, at narrow widths and at zoom, but we have not yet hired an accessibility specialist, and automated measurements cannot prove how a page behaves in a particular screen reader.
  • Screen readers across devices. We have not tested every combination of screen reader, browser and device. If you use one and something here reads badly, that is the most useful report you could send us.
  • Other companies' sites. Google Maps, Yelp, Nextdoor, Instagram and Facebook are linked from here and are outside our control. If one of them blocks you, call us and we will take the details over the phone.
  • Motion. The background clip is still on the home page for everyone else, and it does move. It carries nothing, but if movement bothers you, tell us and we will look at removing it.

If something here does not work for you

Call or text (559) 758-6237, or email AboveAllPlumbing559@gmail.com. Tell us what you were trying to do and what happened, and we will fix what we can.

If the website gets in the way of asking for a quote or booking work, call us and we will take it down over the phone. Nothing on this site is the only way to reach us, and the phone is answered by the people who do the work.

We aim to reply to an accessibility report within two business days.

How this page stays current

We review this page at least once a year, and after any change to the site that affects how it works.
